Having the Wedding of Your Dreams at a Price You Can Afford
By Planning PadIf you’re like me, you’re tired of hearing about the economy. So we won’t talk about it.
Because the truth is that with few exceptions, brides have always had to work within a budget. Maybe those budgets are a little smaller than they used to be, but $20,000, estimated to be the average budget amount in 2009, is still a lot of money to spend on one day.
Having the wedding of your dreams at a price you can afford really is possible. And here’s the secret: spend your money on the things that matter. “Great,” you’re thinking. “More cryptic wedding advice.” Not so fast. Here’s what I mean.
When you close your eyes and imagine your wedding day, what do you see? I’ll bet you see yourself walking down the aisle toward your beloved, cutting the cake, and spending time with your friends and family, leaving in a hail of flower petals. Notice what you didn’t say.
For example, you didn’t say invitations. While having the perfect invitation is nice, chances are you and your mom are the only ones who are going to hold on to the invitation. So why spend thousands of dollars on paper that folks are going to throw away? Give them a special favor instead, one that they will use and enjoy. We recently talked about our DIY invitations. With the ready availability of color laser printers and photocopiers, there’s no reason not to make your own invitations. You can still have designs and colors that will compliment the theme and tone of your wedding; in fact, if you do some of the work yourself, you can have custom invitations that you couldn’t dream of touching for a fraction of the cost from a commercial source.
Everybody talks about trimming the guest list. That’s hard to do because your happiness is so great there is just no limit to the people you want to share it with. I promise you, however, that no bride has looked back on her wedding day and thought, “I wish I had had an extra hundred people there.” No, what you remember looking back is that you didn’t have nearly enough time to spend with the folks who were there. Think intimate and meaningful, and cut your guest list down to your very closest family and friends.
The folks at kiplinger recently wrote an article about saving money on weddings and they highlighted the fact that more people are taking advantage of letting vendors compete for their money. This makes sense. Maybe you think asking for discounts or comparing prices isn’t romantic. There are few things more romantic than a spouse who takes good care of their finances. So go ahead. Compare prices. Ask for discounts. Tell two vendors what the other has offered, and let them complete. Your budget will thank you.
There are a number of wedding favors that do double duty as place card holders and favors, or that can double as table decorations and favors. This is another painless way to save money.
Instead of lamenting that you have a budget, be glad you have money to spend. We want to hear from you: what are some areas in your budget that seem out of control? Let us know, and we’ll put our experts on your case and come up with some suggestions.
